Autism and other related disabilities are on the rise, especially in the U.S. Often, it can be difficult for a family to provide care for disabled loved ones by themselves. Additionally, it can be challenging to find a caregiving company that is positioned to care for people living with disabilities such as autism. That’s where we come in.
Homewatch CareGivers of Idaho recently decided to partner with a hospital to see if we could help a couple of their autistic patients. We were given the opportunity to care for some clients living with autism who are lower functioning and help them transition back home. This allowed them to stay where they were more comfortable while they searched for an alternate living arrangement (such as an assisted living facility), rather than having to stay at the hospital.
At times, it was a challenge learning how to work with these two clients, because they both had anxiety which could escalate quickly. However, it was a rewarding experience as well. It was an excellent opportunity for us to perfect our caregiving techniques by helping these clients cope with the challenges they faced. We were able to identify which caregivers had the best aptitude for success when caring for these clients and found various ways to assist them. This process has helped us expand our knowledge of how to care for clients living with autism. Having learned so much, I have tremendous compassion and appreciation for family members of someone living with autism. The work they do is truly a labor of love, and we are honored to support these families and individuals living with a developmental disability.
