Hydration!

This week and next the forecast in our area averages over 100 degrees Fahrenheit! It’s more important than ever to be sure that we are hydrating sufficiently. Dehydration can occur very quickly at these temperatures. According to WebMd we should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day.” For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day. ( 9-18 cups or 1/2 to 1 gallon). That’s a lot of water!

What are the benefits of water consumption? According to the Mayo Clinic some of the benefits are:

  • Gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements
  • Keeps your temperature normal
  • Lubricates and cushions joints
  • Protects sensitive tissues

Sufficient water intake also helps with fatigue, memory and boosting immunity, something we all could use at this time but especially our seniors. How can we ensure our seniors are hydrating sufficiently? With our homecare services our caregivers provide hydration reminders and actively bring them fluids and encourage them to drink sufficiently. They are also there to report concerns they may have observed to the elder’s families so that the families can also help remind them to hydrate. We provide elder care/senior care services for our clients throughout the Treasure Valley, including Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Star, Middleton, Emmett, Kuna, Homedale, Marsing, Parma.
